How Bemberg™ Supports the SDGs inIndia Through Its Inclusive BusinessModel: A Global Goals Week Spotlight

Global Goals Week is an annual event that brings together partners from different sectors to accelerate action on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 17 goals that aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity for all by 2030. As the producer of Bemberg™, a regenerated cellulose fiber made from cotton linter, Asahi Kasei is proud to participate in this initiative and share how we support the SDGs in India through the Business Call to Action (BCtA).

BCtA is a global platform led by the United Nations Development Programme that encourages private sector companies to develop inclusive business models that contribute to the SDGs while enhancing their competitiveness and profitability. Asahi Kasei joined BCtA in 2017 with a commitment to cooperate with the Indian textile industry and provide solutions to the social issues faced by India through our Bemberg™ business.

Our BCtA consists of three main pillars: industry-academia cooperation, technical assistance for fabric producers, and technical assistance for raw material suppliers. Through these activities, we aim to achieve the following outcomes:

● Increase the income and skills of workers and producers in the textile value chain
● Strengthen our relationship and collaboration with local stakeholders
● Raise the awareness and demand for Bemberg™ among consumers and designers
● Improve the quality and variety of fabrics made with Bemberg™ yarn

By doing so, we contribute to seven SDGs, such as:

No Poverty (SDG 1) & Zero Hunger (SDG 2): We support SDG 1 and 2 by improving the income and livelihoods of workers in our raw material suppliers' factories and by reducing poverty and hunger in their communities. We provide free equipment and technical guidance to produce high-quality cotton linters, a by-product of cottonseed oil production, which enables them to increase their income and diversify their sources of revenue. This may allow the factory owners to offer stable work and wages to the factory workers, thus reducing hunger and malnutrition. Moreover, we promote responsible consumption and production of Bemberg™ by ensuring its environmental sustainability and traceability. This might help to conserve natural resources and reduce environmental degradation, which are essential for ensuring sustainable agriculture and food systems.

Quality Education (SDG 4): We support the education of students and young people who
will lead the Indian textile and fashion industries by collaborating with academic institutions such as NID, NIFT, and DKTE. We provide lectures, workshops, field trips, and sponsorships to help them learn about Bemberg™ and its applications, as well as the latest trends and innovations in the global market.

Gender Equality (SDG 5): We empower women in society by creating opportunities for them to pursue their careers in the textile and fashion industries. Many of our students and partners are women who have shown their creativity and talent using Bemberg™.

Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8): We improve the working conditions and incomes of workers and producers in the textile value chain by providing technical assistance, equipment, and guidance. We help them enhance their productivity, efficiency, quality, and profitability using Bemberg™. We also create jobs and stimulate economic growth by expanding the market for Bemberg™ products in India.

Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9): We foster innovation and infrastructure development in the textile industry by introducing advanced technologies and practices from Japan and other countries. We help our partners adopt new methods and machines for producing that meet the diverse needs and preferences of consumers. We also support research and development activities that lead to new applications and designs using Bemberg™.

Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12): We promote responsible consumption and production of Bemberg™ by ensuring its environmental sustainability and traceability. Bemberg™ is made from cotton linters, a pre-consumer material obtained from the manufacturing process of cottonseed oil. By using this material, we reduce waste generation and resource consumption. Bemberg™ is also biodegradable and compostable, which means it does not harm the environment after use. Moreover, we work with our raw material suppliers to improve their practices for recovering, processing, and transporting cotton linters. We also implement systems for tracking and verifying the origin and quality of cotton linters. We believe that our BCtA is not only beneficial for our business, but also for our partners, customers, communities, and society at large. We are committed to continuing our efforts to make a positive impact through our Bemberg™ business in India.
